The History Of Chocolate

It all started with the Aztecs of Mexico.  We derive the word chocolate from the Aztec language family of Nahuatl where there is a word xocolatl.  This word is a combination of the words xocolli (bitter) and the word atl (water).  It is likely that the word was derived from the Mayan word for the cacao bean.  In both the Mayan and Aztec cultures, chocolate was associated with the fertility gods.

For all of the known history of chocolate, it was used in drink form.  Ancient pottery found in Honduras, dating back to 1100 B.C., was found with residue of chocolate.  This predates the Mayans.
